Now, you don’t understand. Amanda was one of those girls that are in every high school-she was really athletic, tall, lanky (yep, no boobs) and not very attractive at all. Rumor had it that she was really a man-she even had the husky voice thing going for her further adding fuel to the rumor fire. People even referred to her as, “A-MAN-duh” to make a bright freakin’ light of her situation.

So yeah, it was just like one of those teen movies-a guy is challenged to ask the dumpy girl out to prom and it all ends happy, right? Well…

So I walk up to Amanda and try to make small talk. She wasn’t really much of a conversation (probably thinking I was trying to make fun of her) until I ask her out to prom. She suddenly becomes VERY happy and friendly and readily accepts my invite.

Now this actually made me feel kind of good. Here was a girl who didn’t really have any friends to speak of, and wasn’t popular at all. She generally walked through the halls of my school with a pissed off look on her face, probably because of her situation (and questionable combination of chromosomes). And suddenly, she was…happy…and I was the one who made her…happy. Just ask any of my friends, I’m a bastard. But for some reason, making someone suddenly happy made me happy. Strange stuff.

So I had to take the ribbing of my friends for the weeks leading up to the prom-I had to take the weird, shocked looks from people who asked me who I was taking to prom-I had to psyche myself up to take a girl to prom that I didn’t really want to take to prom. But in all of this, I felt good about myself (wow, Mr. Charity).

In all of this, I was also actually starting to look forward to it. I was talking with Amanda, you know, planning and stuff, and was really getting along with her. She was nice, funny, smart and actually had interesting things to say.

While all of this was well and good, I still had the thought that she might actually be a man in the back of my mind. It didn’t help that EVERYONE (including my parents) were reminding me of this fact. So even though I was looking forward to hanging out with Amanda, I was still trying to play it cool to them making it seem like I was dreading the upcoming night.

So prom night arrives-I was looking amazing…not the first or last time…in my tux and I’m feeling pretty good. I go to Amanda’s house to pick her up and she comes down the stairs looking absolutely…HOT. I’m serious, dude, she cleaned up extremely well. Thanks to padding, she even had boobs (and no visible Adam’s apple) there was NO WAY she could be a guy, right?
